About Kent Island Wildlife Management Area

Kent Island Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. This protected area covers wetlands, marshes, and tidal shorelines, providing critical habitat for a variety of waterfowl, shorebirds, and other wildlife. Established to conserve and manage Maryland's waterfowl populations, Kent Island WMA plays an important role in regional ecological health by supporting migratory species along the Atlantic Flyway. The area comprises tidal marshes, mudflats, and upland zones that are accessible mainly by boat, offering unique opportunities for outdoor recreation such as birdwatching, shore fishing, and waterfowl hunting during designated seasons. Because much of Kent Island WMA consists of open marshland and shallow waters, it is a prime destination for nature enthusiasts interested in observing species like black ducks, Canada geese, and various herons. The area is also popular among anglers targeting species such as striped bass and perch. While developed trails and facilities are limited due to the WMA's natural wetland environment, its proximity to Kent Island and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge makes it accessible for day trips and wildlife viewing excursions. Visitors appreciate the solitude, scenic water views, and the abundance of wildlife in a coastal ecosystem that remains largely undisturbed by urban development. Kent Island WMA is managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, which oversees habitat conservation and public access while regulating hunting and fishing to sustain the area's ecological balance.
